Life Insurance Helped Keep Lamar Odom on the Path to Success

He may be living under a high intensity celebrity spotlight as a Los Angeles Lakers forward and star of the hit reality TV show Khloé & Lamar, but Lamar Odom had much simpler beginnings.

His journey began in a single-parent household in Queens, N.Y. Even though his mother, Cathy, earned a modest income working as a corrections officer, she sent him to Catholic school because of concerns about the public schools in their rough-and-tumble neighborhood. Sadly, she didn’t live to see Lamar’s success. She died of colon cancer when he was just 12.

I believe in life insurance. Life insurance money helped pay for my college education, it helped pay for my grandfather's funeral expenses, and it helped my father-in-law save money for my wife, Terisa. I believe every adult needs life insurance, especially if you are married, have children, or own a business.

So, you think life insurance is expensive? If you buy Starbucks Venti-size coffees or buy Whataburger Combo Meals, you can afford to purchase a life insurance policy.

You don't drink your coffee in one big gulp, do you? Take your most important financial commitment (for example, your home mortgage or your child's college education) and insure that first. It's important to get started with a life insurance plan now, and then as your life changes, make changes to your plan.

Life insurance is flexible. Life insurance companies offer the ability to "convert" your policy to a different plan later in life. When you convert your life insurance policy to a different plan, you generally do not have to prove insurability again (i.e.,  no medical records, no blood tests, etc). For A Good Deal On Life Insurance, Shop When You're Least In Need

I came across a great life insurance article in Forbes magazine yesterday (not that I read Forbes a lot, but it's a free subscription). The article points out that you need to purchase life insurance when you are young and healthy so you can get the best price and best terms possible.

Life insurance comes in many different flavors to cover different situations. You might have a 20 or 30 year level term policy to cover you until your children are grown, or to cover you until your home mortgage is paid off.

In other situations, you would use permanent life insurance (universal or whole life) to pay estate taxes, or to make sure your child has life insurance in place before health issues occur, or even to make a donation to your favorite charity.

Whole life insurance is especially useful for older people that put off purchasing life insurance, because whole life can be issued in smaller amounts to cover burial and funeral expenses.

The Forbes article also reviews disability insurance, and states: "Working adults have a 3% chance of becoming disabled before retirement age, compared with a 1% to 2% chance of dying." So, while many people focus on obtaining life insurance, working adults are statistically at a higher risk of becoming disabled.

Florida Hospital Employee Charged With Taking Out Life Insurance On Patient

In Blountstown, Florida police charged two Calhoun Liberty Hospital employees with conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and forgery. The two employees purchased three different life insurance policies on a 74-year old patient in the hospital. The total value of the life insurance was $200,000.

Leslie Bibb's realLIFEstory

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. The Life Foundation and actress Leslie Bibb produced a short video of Leslie describing how life insurance saved their family after her father died in an accident. Take a look at Leslie's video, it is only a minute.

I did not know who Leslie Bibb was until I read her biography - she played in "Iron Man 2" and "Talladega Nights." Just like Leslie, I lost my father in a car accident at a young age. His life insurance helped me go to college.
