For A Good Deal On Life Insurance, Shop When You're Least In Need

I came across a great life insurance article in Forbes magazine yesterday (not that I read Forbes a lot, but it's a free subscription). The article points out that you need to purchase life insurance when you are young and healthy so you can get the best price and best terms possible.

Life insurance comes in many different flavors to cover different situations. You might have a 20 or 30 year level term policy to cover you until your children are grown, or to cover you until your home mortgage is paid off.

In other situations, you would use permanent life insurance (universal or whole life) to pay estate taxes, or to make sure your child has life insurance in place before health issues occur, or even to make a donation to your favorite charity.

Whole life insurance is especially useful for older people that put off purchasing life insurance, because whole life can be issued in smaller amounts to cover burial and funeral expenses.

The Forbes article also reviews disability insurance, and states: "Working adults have a 3% chance of becoming disabled before retirement age, compared with a 1% to 2% chance of dying." So, while many people focus on obtaining life insurance, working adults are statistically at a higher risk of becoming disabled.

Former LSU Lineman Suing Lloyd's of London over $2M Insurance Policy

Since it is football season, I thought this would be an interesting article to share.

Former LSU offensive lineman Ciron Black is suing Lloyds of London over an insurance policy that was suppose to protect him from a career ending injury. He in fact suffered a career ending injury on November 7, 2009 during the LSU/Alabama game. Apparently, Lloyds of London is not paying the claim, thus the lawsuit.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month. When you have a disability and cannot work, you lose your income and standard of living. So disability insurance is really "paycheck insurance."

The LIFE Foundation's brochure, "What You Need To Know About Disability Insurance" is a great place to start learning about the risks of disability and whether a disability insurance policy is right for you.
